Ottawa - Capital of Canada and my first hiking trip

I spent the last days in Ottawa in a hostel which was a jail in the past. I shared the cell with two girls from Teneriffe and two girls from Brasil and one girl from Switzerland. It was quite a nice room and I went out with the spanish girls a couple of times.

On Tuesday I went to Parliament Hill and got a free tour through the House of Commons and the Senate. It was really interesting to hear something about Canadian politics and how the land is politically structured. Though it was the first day in Ottawa, I bought some fruits and spent a lot of time just sitting in front of the river and enjoyed the nice atmosphere in the town. There is a nice market in Ottawa which is called “By Ward Market” where you can eat a lot, buy some nice things and meet interesting people. It is funny because you almost hear more French than English. One reason could be that the river through the city marks the border between Ontario and Quebec. So if you are on the other side of the city accidentally every explanation is written in French first.

In the evening me and the Spanish girls went to the “Sound and Light Show” on Parliament Hill, which I really loved. It took about half an hour and they presented a lot of canadian history and it felt just great being there.

On Wednesday I went to the famous IMAX Cinema with the spanish girls. We watched a film called “Under the sea” and it was quite cool being in an IMAX because it was the first time I had seen it.

Thursday was a crazy day. Me and Elisa, a finnish girl, went to the famous Canadian Museum of Civilization. It was so great there, that we almost spent four hours in it and did not see everything at all. We had Sushi after the Museum to recover a bit and decided to go to the Provincial Park outside Ottawa. So we took a bus to go there and it really felt like leaving civilization. It was my first hiking trip in Canada and I really underestimate the distances here. We wanted to see a special lake inside the park and our map said that it was about 5 km to get there. It took us about two hours getting there and we were bitten by a hundred of mosqitos because we nearly had 30 °C and it was pretty muddy and wet inside the forest. They really were like little vampires and we had to hide ourselves with our clothes as far as possible .

Finally, we reached the lake and it was really worth the trip. It was so beautiful! But it was almost seven a clock and we definitely had to leave. A woman told us to go another way to reach a bus and we tried it. It took us another two hours without seeing any busses at all. Finally, we asked a couple with a car whether they could help us and they were so kind that they took us with them until our hostel in Ottawa! That was so amazing because we really were lost into the forest.

It was one of these special days where you do not expect anything before having breakfast and then it turns out as a very special day where a lot of different things happen.

Me and Elisa are going to travel to Montreal today - I really look forward to stay in this city!

Meeting Marilyn Monroe at the Niagara Falls

Today we saw the beautiful Niagara Falls! 

Dorina (the swedish girl) and me headed to Niagara-on-the-lake and checked in at a cosy little hostel near the falls. We almost spent four hours at the falls - they were awesome! But everything around there was too touristic and looked like a little Las Vegas or something. We took the maid of the Mist, the boat, and went through the water with it. All the people got blue jackets against the water. The ride with the boat was really fantastic and we enjoyed our trip! The weather was very nice today that we needed sunblocker. It really felt like holidays. After the trip I enjoyed my first dinner in a cosy little restaurant near the hostel. We had Steak with Ale Pie, it was very delicious. 

I am heading to Ottawa tomorrow and will stay at a former jail there like in Stockholm. I really look forward to the next stations.

Impressions of Toronto

Hey there,

Toronto ist auf jeden Fall eine aufregende Stadt! Leider ist hier seit Wochen ein Streik im Gange, der besonders die Müllabfuh betrifft, so dass die Stadt ewig nicht sauber gemacht wurde oder Mülleimer geleehrt wurden. Entsprechend riecht es auch...

Wir haben uns die Füße schon gut wund gelaufen und sind durch Chinatown, Downtown, die Harbourfront etc gelatscht. Gestern war so mieses Wetter, da sind wir spontan ins Royal Ontario Museum gegangen, das war echt der Hit. Abends gab es dann noch ein BBQ im Hostel und ich habe den ersten Beef-Burger genossen. Ok, einen Oringinal-Toronto-HotDog habe ich auch schon Intus.

Ich bleib jetzt noch bis Sonntag hier und dann fahr ich mit einer Schwedin für eine Nacht zu den Niagara Falls, um dann Montag wieder nach Toronto zu kommen. Von da aus fahr ich dann gleich weiter zur nächsten Station, die ich noch nicht ganz kenne.

Wir wollen gleich erstmal zum Kensigton Market und heute abend startet hier das "Canadiana Voices" Festival mit Musik und Poetry Slam, das wir natürlich sehen wollen.

In Toronto fahren auf jeden Fall jede Menge dicke Autos und die Leute sind super nett und hilfsbreit (do you need directions?). Demnächst werde ich auch ein paar Fotos hochladen.

Triband ist nicht Triband

Dank des netten Rogers Gehilfen habe ich rausgefunden, dass mein Handy doch kein Triband Handy ist, sondern lediglich Dual Band....Also kann es auch kein Netz finden. Ich könnte aber ein neues für 100 Dollar kaufen, arrghhh...Darüber muss ich noch stark nachdenken, also erstmal nichts mit Telefonieren!

Crossing the Border

Hey Guys,

ich bin gut angekommen! Nach vielen Stunden Flug und Bekanntschaften wundersamer Menschen bin ich gut auf kanadischem Boden angekommen. Ich habe erfolgreich die Grenze passieren dürfen und mich durch das Straßennetz Torontos geschlagen. Jetzt bin ich im Hostel angekommen und nutze das freie Wireless. Mit dem Telefonieren bin ich noch nicht so schlau, hab mir eine Karte für Deutschland gekauft, aber musste zusätzlich Geld einwerfen um dann auch akustisch kaum was zu verstehen...Wir werden sehen.
Als nächstes muss ich mir wohl einen Stom Konverter anschaffen, damit ich den Akku vom Lappi aufladen kann etc. Mein Handy funktioniert auch noch nicht, da werd ich mich ebenfalls drum kümmern. Ansonsten bin ich schon durch Wolkenkratzer bei heißen Temperaturen mit 30 kg Gepäck gestampft und habe aber noch kaum Eindrücke gewinnen können. Dafür bin ich viel zu fertig...
